Biography
Nicolas Melis is a versatile Cypriot pianist and keyboardist with a wide-ranging musical background spanning classical, contemporary, and electronic music. He is a graduate of the University of Music and Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig, Germany, where he studied Piano Performance and Contemporary Improvisation. He has received numerous awards in national and international competitions, including First Prize at the International Piano Competition for Young Musicians of H.O.N. in Athens, Greece, and a Special Prize at the 1st International Piano Competition of E.P.T.A. in Zagreb, Croatia, among others.
He has performed as a concert soloist and chamber musician in Cyprus, Germany, England, Croatia, Bulgaria, Finland, Greece, Montenegro, and Korea, and has collaborated with conductors including Ron Dirk Entleutner (Germany), Kim Ming Song (Korea), Alkis Baltas (Greece), Lisa Xanthopoulou (Greece), and Yiorgos Kountouris (Cyprus). His appearances with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra include performances of Sergei Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, presented in major cities and concert halls across Cyprus.
He has also participated in cultural programmes including Cyprus Miniatures, Cyprus Spring, and Cyprus Moments, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Berlin, with performances in Cologne, Berlin, and at Gasteig in Munich. Melis has collaborated with international artists including Adam Levy (USA), Greg Koch (USA), Kirk Fletcher (USA), Bex Marshall (UK), Gil Edwards (Norway), and The Blues Wire (Greece). He has also performed at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, and at the EUNIC Jazz Festival in Berlin. In 2015, he became the first Cypriot artist to be endorsed by Swedish keyboard manufacturer Clavia Nord. In 2018, he was endorsed by the legendary American synthesizer manufacturer Dave Smith Instruments (now Sequential).
Nicolas is also active as an educator. He is currently a Piano Instructor at the State Music School of Nicosia, a Special Scientist in the Department of Music at European University Cyprus, and teaches Contemporary Improvisation for classical musicians at Arte Music Academy. In recent years, he has expanded his musical activities into the world of synthesizers and electronic music, releasing the album Bach on a Synth with Austrian label Vogelrecords.
