Biography
Nicolas Melis is a versatile, highly accomplished Cypriot pianist and keyboardist, known for his impressive performances and numerous awards and accolades. He is a graduate of the University of Music and Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy”, Leipzig, Germany, and has studied both Piano Performance in Classical music and Contemporary Improvisation. He has won numerous competition awards both at national and international level including the 1st Prize at the International Piano Competition for young musicians of H.O.N in Athens, Greece and a special prize at the 1st international piano competition of E.P.T.A. in Zagreb, Croatia amongst others.
He has performed as a concert soloist and chamber musician in Cyprus, Germany, England, Croatia, Bulgaria, Finland, Greece, Montenegro and Korea and he has collaborated with conductors Ron Dirk Entleutner (GER), Kim Ming Song (KOR), Alkis Baltas (GR), Lisa Xanthopoulou (GR) and Yiorgos Kountouris (CY). Melis’ appearances with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra include S. Rachmaninov’s Piano concerto no.2 in C minor op. 18, performed in the main cities and music halls of Cyprus. He often participates in the cultural programmes Cyprus Miniatures, Cyprus Spring and Cyprus Moments organised by the Republic of Cyprus Embassy in Berlin, having already performed in Koeln, Berlin, Gasteig – Munich.
Melis has successfully collaborated with a number of international artists including Adam Levy (USA), Greg Koch (USA), KirkFletcher(USA), Bex Marhsall (UK), Gil Edwards (N0R), and The Blues Wire (GR). He has also performed at the Palais Des Natios in Geneva, Switzerland and at the Eunic Jazz Festival Berlin.
In 2015, he becomes the first Cypriot artist to be endorsed by the Swedish keyboard manufacturer Clavia Nord while in 2018 he was endorsed by the legendary, American Synth manufacturer Dave Smith Instruments (Sequential).
Melis is currently a Piano Instructor at the State Music School Nicosia and he also collaborates with the European University Cyprus (Department of Music) as a Special Scientist.
He has recently explored new musical territories, venturing into the world of synthesizers releasing the album Bach on a Synth with Vogelrecords (Austria).
